Who we are
Heather Brittingham is a highly accomplished veterinary technician with over 12 years of experience working in zoos across the United States. She is among only 20 specialists in zoo veterinary technology, a credential achieved through a rigorous three-year process. Heather is recognized for developing advanced protocols, delivering in-house diagnostic laboratory training, enhancing diagnostic imaging practices, and implementing techniques that improve patient care. She has established and led veterinary technician student programs at multiple zoos, cultivating a diverse national talent pool, mentoring colleagues, and introducing improvements across the industry. Motivated to support technicians facing complex challenges with diverse species, Heather founded Zoo Veterinary Technician Training, LLC, where she now provides these services on a full-time basis.
Through Zoo Veterinary Technician Training (ZVTT), Heather offers mentorship and training as a recognized expert to support onboarding and staff development, elevating patient care standards. Although zoos and exotic animal clinics may employ credentialed veterinary technicians, transitioning to non-domestic animal care or adapting to new facilities presents significant challenges. Newly hired technicians typically require one to two years to achieve full proficiency. During this period, existing staff train and integrate new team members, which may temporarily reduce operational efficiency. The daily emergence of new and complex tasks further necessitates focused attention and specialized expertise.
Heather is dedicated to advancing the professional recognition of highly trained veterinary technicians and empowering them to develop confidence in their skills across all species. This commitment contributes to elevating medical standards for zoo and exotic companion animals.
